Apple quietly dropped something big for developers this week. The company open-sourced a command-line tool called container that runs every Linux container inside its own lightweight virtual machine. No shared kernel, no shared risk.
Things to Know:
One VM Per Container: Unlike Docker Desktop, which puts all containers in a single shared Linux VM, Apple gives each container its own isolated environment. That means a problem in one container stays in that container, full stop.
Built for Apple Silicon: The tool is written in Swift and runs exclusively on M-series Macs. Intel Mac users are out of luck, but macOS 26 users get the best networking and virtualization support.
OCI Images Work Out of the Box: You can pull images straight from Docker Hub or GitHub Container Registry and run them without converting anything. Whatever you build can also be pushed to any standard registry.
No Docker Compose, Though: There is no GUI and no built-in Compose support, so this is not a drop-in Docker Desktop replacement yet. It is built for single-container runs where clean isolation matters more than convenience features.
Apple releasing this under the Apache 2.0 license means anyone can use it, build on it, or ship it commercially without worrying about fees. For developers running AI workloads or untrusted code locally on a Mac, this is a genuinely useful option.
