OpenAI Cures GPT-4 ‘Laziness’ With New Updates!

OpenAI confirmed the update of GPT-4 Turbo in a blog post. The core reason for this update is to get rid of the ‘Laziness’ of GPT-4.

Meanwhile, at the Chinese launch of its new Galaxy S24 series, Samsung Electronics China said it would be using Baidu’s Ernie AI to power Galaxy AI features like translation and summaries.

OpenAI Cures GPT-4 ‘Laziness’ With New Updates:

Some ChatGPT users recently complained about the chatbot frequently refusing to complete prompted tasks and blamed the lack of updates to GPT-4.

That’s why they updated the GPT-4 Turbo, but didn’t make it clear what they really updated!

OpenAI said in the post that more than 70 percent of those using GPT-4 via its API have moved to GPT-4 Turbo because of its more updated knowledge base.

The company said more updates to GPT-4 Turbo are coming in the next few months, including the general availability of GPT-4 Turbo with vision.

OpenAI also launched smaller AI models called embeddings. OpenAI defines Embeddings as a “sequence of numbers that represents the concepts within content such as natural language or codes.”

These new models, text-embedding-3-small and a more powerful version called text-embedding-3-large, are available now.

Samsung’s New Phones Replace Google AI with Baidu in China:

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 lineup has launched in China, and the company is tapping Chinese tech giant Baidu to power its Galaxy AI features.

There’s no mention of Google, whose Gemini foundational models are powering Samsung’s Galaxy AI features in Western markets.

The list of AI translation, summarization, and text formatting features on the Chinese version of the Galaxy S24 will be familiar to anyone who kept up with its US-based launch.

There’s also real-time call translation like we saw earlier this month, and the phones are even getting a version of Google’s Circle to Search feature.

The substitution is likely a result of Google’s limited presence in China. Although Android devices are widely sold in the country, they ship without the Google apps and services that are an intrinsic part of the operating system elsewhere.

Samsung’s hold on China has waned considerably in the last decade. A report this week from IDC didn’t even place it in the top five brands for mobile shipments in 2023.

ChatGPT Plans to Become the Default Voice Assistant on Android:

A recent ChatGPT beta is giving a select group of users the ability to turn the AI into their device’s new default voice assistant on Android.

This information comes from industry insider Mishaal Rahman on X who posted a video of himself trying out the feature live.

According to the post, users can add a shortcut to ChatGPT Assistant, as it’s referred to, directly into an Android’s Quick Settings panel. The clip shows it does take the AI some time to come up with a response – about 15 seconds.

The full onboarding process of the feature is unknown although 9To5Google claims in their report you will need to pick a voice when you launch it for the first time. If they like what they hear, they can stick with a particular voice or go back a step to exchange it with another.

To try out this update, you will need a subscription to ChatGPT Plus which costs $20 a month. Next, you install either ChatGPT for Android version 1.2024.017 or .018, whatever is available to you. Go to the Beta Features section in ChatGPT’s Settings menu and it should be there ready to be activated.

Rahman in his post says no one can set ChatGPT as their default assistant at the moment. However, lines of code found in a ChatGPT patch from early January suggest this will be possible in the future.
