Meta is laying off hundreds across recruiting, sales, social media, and Reality Labs. The company won't say how many jobs are gone, but with 79,000 employees as of December, the cuts are surgical, not existential.

Reality Labs Gets Hit Again: Meta already cut at least 1,000 Reality Labs workers in January. Now there's a second wave. The metaverse ambition is quietly being dismantled one layoff at a time.
The VR Shutdown Spree: Three VR studios are closed. The work metaverse is gone. Supernatural's new content is done. Meta has been walking back its virtual reality bets faster than it made them.
The AI Price Tag: Meta is projected to spend up to $135 billion building out its AI data centers. That kind of budget needs to come from somewhere, and apparently somewhere is headcount.
Meta is quietly unwinding the metaverse era while going all-in on AI infrastructure, and the people caught in between are paying the price. The company will not confirm exact numbers, but the direction is clear. Less VR, more AI.

Google Just Built the Real Pied Piper Algorithm:
Google announced TurboQuant, a new AI memory compression algorithm that cuts working memory by at least 6x without losing accuracy. The internet immediately had one reaction, and yes, it was a "Silicon Valley" joke.
Things to Know:
The Pied Piper Comparison: HBO's fictional startup built a lossless compression algorithm. TurboQuant does something similar for AI memory. The internet noticed, and honestly, the comparison holds up pretty well.
How It Works: TurboQuant targets the KV cache, AI's runtime working memory. Using vector quantization, it shrinks that memory by 6x while keeping output quality intact.
Google's DeepSeek Moment: Cloudflare's CEO called this Google's DeepSeek moment. If it scales, AI inference gets cheaper, faster, and far less memory-hungry across the board.
Still a Lab Thing: TurboQuant hasn't shipped anywhere yet. It only targets inference memory, not training. So the RAM problem in AI isn't fully solved, just partially dented.
This is a genuine efficiency win if it makes it out of the lab. Cheaper AI inference means lower costs for companies building on top of these models. Whether TurboQuant becomes the real Pied Piper or stays a research paper is the only question left.
Apple Is Shrinking Gemini to Fit Your iPhone:
Google handed Apple the full keys to Gemini inside its own data centers. Apple isn't just using it as a chatbot fallback anymore. It's using it to build something much smaller and faster.
Things to Know:
The Distillation Deal: Apple feeds Gemini tasks, collects the answers and reasoning, then trains smaller models from them. Think of it as Gemini teaching a student who fits inside your pocket.
Runs Without Wi-Fi: The models Apple builds from this process run entirely on-device. No internet required, which means faster responses and fewer privacy concerns with every Siri query.
Edit Gemini Too: Apple can also modify Gemini's outputs to match its own standards before they get used. That is a level of AI control most companies would not hand over to a partner.
This deal goes much deeper than a simple API handshake. Apple is reshaping Gemini to fit its ecosystem, and the results are headed to iOS 27. Siri is finally getting the rebuild it has needed for years.
