Nvidia Gets Green Light for H200 AI Chip Exports:
The Trump administration just reversed course on AI chip exports. Nvidia can now ship its powerful H200 chips to China again, but there's a catch. The U.S. government is taking a 25% cut of every sale.
Things to Know:
The Deal Structure: Nvidia can only export H200 chips that are roughly 18 months old to approved Chinese customers. The Commerce Department will vet each buyer, and Uncle Sam gets a quarter of the revenue from these deals.
Congressional Conflict: Two senators just introduced legislation to block advanced chip exports for 30 months. The SAFE Chips Act would require the Commerce Department to deny these licenses, but Trump already gave Nvidia the thumbs up.
Market Background: China's internet regulator banned domestic companies from buying Nvidia chips back in September. Chinese firms have been stuck with less advanced domestic options from Alibaba and Huawei since then.
Exports won’t be a free-for-all. Customers must be vetted and approved by the Commerce Department. This controlled framework aims to keep national security intact while allowing Nvidia to reclaim a critical market.
