Tencent Open-Sources Industrial 3D Generation:

Tencent just open-sourced Hunyuan3D 2.1 and it's a notable update. This is the first industrial-grade 3D generation model that runs on consumer GPUs with full PBR (Physically Based Rendering) texture support.
The difference matters – PBR textures simulate how light actually interacts with materials, making 3D objects appear more realistic under different lighting conditions.
In blind tests, users preferred these over traditional RGB textures by 78%. They’re also compatible with major engines like Unreal and Unity, making the outputs easier to integrate into real workflows.
Hunyuan3D is also the world’s first full-stack open-source industrial-grade 3D solution—enabling both pros and general creators to generate high-quality 3D content locally. It was announced at CVPR 2025 as part of Tencent’s broader effort to democratize industrial-grade 3D tools.
The 2.1 update improves mesh precision and topological consistency for more accurate texture mapping. Internally, Tencent cut asset creation time from two days to under five hours.
It’s fully open-source—model weights, training code, and data pipelines included—so developers can fine-tune, retrain, or optimize as needed. Deployment tutorials on GitHub make it easy for individuals and small teams to set up local workflows without high costs.
With 1.8 million downloads already, it’s clear that interest is growing in bringing industrial-quality 3D tools to a wider developer base — without the enterprise-level requirements.
Google Launches Open-Source AI for Terminals:

Google just dropped Gemini CLI, a new open-source AI tool for developers. It runs directly in your terminal and supports natural language prompts. This move brings Gemini’s power closer to where developers actually work.
Things to Know:
Terminal-First AI Experience: Gemini CLI is designed to run locally in the terminal, giving developers fast, direct access to Gemini AI. It supports tasks like debugging, writing code, and running commands using plain language.
Beyond Just Coding: While built for developers, Gemini CLI can also generate videos, write research reports, and fetch real-time data using Google Search. It even connects to external databases via MCP servers.
Open Source and Generous Limits: Google open-sourced Gemini CLI under the Apache 2.0 license to encourage community contributions. Free users get 60 requests per minute and 1,000 per day—double the average usage.
Gemini CLI works with Gemini Code Assist and supports custom prompts, automation, and extensions. It’s built to fit smoothly into existing workflows and adapt to personal preferences. It’s fast, flexible, and surprisingly versatile.
Authors Sue Microsoft Over AI Book Training:

Microsoft is facing a new lawsuit from several authors who claim their books were used without permission to train an AI model. The authors allege Microsoft used pirated copies of nearly 200,000 books. This case adds to growing legal pressure on AI companies.
Things to Know:
The Lawsuit Explained: A group of authors, including Kai Bird and Jia Tolentino, filed a lawsuit in New York federal court. They claim Microsoft used pirated books to train its Megatron AI model without consent.
What the Authors Want: The authors are asking the court to stop Microsoft from using their work and want damages of up to $150,000 per book. They argue that the AI mimics their writing style and themes.
Microsoft’s Position: Microsoft hasn’t commented yet, but tech companies often argue that AI training qualifies as fair use. They say it helps create new, transformative content.
Microsoft is being targeted due to its deep financial and technical partnership with OpenAI. The authors argue that this relationship makes Microsoft directly responsible for the misuse of their copyrighted materials.
Sam Altman’s Trademark Battle Over "io":

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is facing a trademark lawsuit over the name “io” from audio startup Iyo. Altman publicly shared emails with Iyo’s founder to defend OpenAI’s position. The dispute has forced OpenAI to drop the “io” branding temporarily.
Things to Know:
The Lawsuit Begins: Iyo, a startup focused on AI-powered audio devices, sued OpenAI for trademark infringement. They claim OpenAI’s “io” branding is too similar and harms their business identity.
Altman’s Response: Altman called the lawsuit “silly” and shared past emails showing Iyo had pitched him for investment. He argued OpenAI was transparent about building a competing product.
Court’s Temporary Order: A judge granted Iyo a restraining order, forcing OpenAI to remove all “io” branding. This includes deleting blog posts and scrubbing the name from its website.
Altman’s public defense adds fuel to the fire. Iyo says it’s close to launching its own product and fears confusion could derail its progress. OpenAI, meanwhile, is pushing forward with its $6.5B hardware plans.
