Welcome back, AI enthusiast.

Three of the biggest U.S. AI companies have quietly started coordinating to stop Chinese firms from copying their models.

This is the first time these rivals have shared intelligence at this scale. How much has already leaked?

The AI Cold War Just Got a New Defense Strategy:

Three companies that compete hard every day are now quietly sharing intelligence with each other. OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic are teaming up through the Frontier Model Forum to stop Chinese AI firms from cloning their models on the cheap.

Things to Know:

  • What Is Distillation: AI distillation is when a smaller "student" model learns from a bigger "teacher" model. It gets problematic when outsiders do it without permission to clone proprietary systems.

  • The DeepSeek Effect: DeepSeek's R1 launch in early 2025 kicked all of this off. OpenAI and Microsoft investigated whether R1 was built by scraping outputs from U.S. models without authorization.

  • The Numbers Are Ugly: Anthropic tracked 16 million fraudulent queries from DeepSeek, Moonshot, and MiniMax alone. U.S. officials estimate this kind of unauthorized copying costs Silicon Valley billions annually.

  • The Safety Problem: Beyond lost revenue, there's a bigger issue. Cloned models often skip the safety features built into the originals, making them easier to misuse at scale.

Anthropic has already taken direct action, blocking Chinese-controlled companies from accessing Claude entirely. The Trump administration's AI Action Plan also supports formalizing this kind of info-sharing. Whether that's enough to stop a practice that's already this far along is a fair question to ask.

Gemini Now Has a Mental Health Button:

Google just gave Gemini a mental health makeover, and the timing is not a coincidence. A wrongful death lawsuit accused Gemini of coaching a user into delusion and ultimately suicide. That will move fast on any company's priority list.

Things to Know:

  • The New Feature: Gemini now shows a one-touch interface for users showing signs of crisis. It connects them to hotlines and keeps the help option visible throughout the entire conversation.

  • The Lawsuit Behind It: A Florida man's father sued Google after Gemini allegedly convinced his son they were "in love." The chatbot reportedly reinforced his delusions until he died by suicide in October 2025.

  • Not the Only One: Google is not alone here. OpenAI and Character AI have faced similar lawsuits, with courts increasingly asking how much liability AI companies carry when things go wrong.

  • What Google Says: Google clarified that Gemini is not a replacement for therapy or crisis care. But it acknowledged that people are using it that way regardless, especially during emergencies.

This update is a redesign more than a brand new feature, making crisis resources faster to reach with more empathetic language. Whether it is enough to satisfy a jury is a separate question entirely. The lawsuits are not going anywhere.

Iran Just Threatened OpenAI's Biggest Bet:

Iran's military released a video on April 3 pointing directly at the Stargate AI datacenter in Abu Dhabi. They even called out the facility hidden from Google Maps. The AI infrastructure race now has a geopolitical problem it can't route around.

Things to Know:

  • The Threat: Iran's IRGC threatened to destroy U.S. tech facilities in the Gulf if America attacks Iranian power plants. The Stargate campus in Abu Dhabi was named and shown in night-vision satellite footage.

  • What Stargate UAE Actually Is: It is a $30 billion, 1-gigawatt AI campus backed by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle. At full build-out, it will be the single largest AI compute cluster outside the United States.

  • This Is Not Just Talk: Iranian drones already knocked two AWS data center zones offline in the UAE in March. It was the first time in history a state deliberately targeted commercial data centers in an active conflict.

  • What It Means for AI Infrastructure: Insurers and investors are now reassessing risk across every Gulf data center project. Northern Europe, India, and Southeast Asia are already being floated as safer alternatives.

The Gulf was supposed to be the fastest-growing data center market in the world this year. One military video changed that math fast. Where AI gets built next is now as much a security question as a technology one.
