Microsoft is giving Paint some serious upgrades. Windows 11’s Paint app will soon support its own project-file format, like Photoshop’s PSD. You’ll also get opacity sliders to manage transparency better than ever.

Things to Know:

  • Project Files Added: Microsoft Paint is introducing a native project file format, which lets users save files with layers intact. This move moves it closer to what tools like PSD have offered professionally.

  • Opacity & Transparency Controls: Paint will gain opacity sliders for pencil and brush tools so you can vary transparency. Transparent backgrounds and true erasing (showing underlying layers) are also supported now.

  • Layer Support Refined: You can add, order, hide, duplicate, or merge layers in Paint, allowing more complex editing. These improvements let users stack shapes, text, and other elements flexibly.

These features are rolling out to Windows Insiders first (Canary/Dev channels), version 11.2308.18.0 or newer. Wider release to all Windows 11 users will follow once testing stabilizes. This update makes Paint far more capable for creative work without leaving its simple roots.

Alibaba’s AI Chip Rivals Nvidia’s H20 AI Chip:
