Scientists Use Codex to Model Black Holes:

Black holes have always been the ultimate puzzle for science. Now, an astrophysicist is using OpenAI's Codex to crack open a problem that has stumped researchers for decades. No, it's not science fiction.

Things to Know:

  • The problem with plasma: Simulating plasma near black holes is painfully slow. Particles spiral around magnetic fields trillions of times, forcing supercomputers to calculate every tiny movement instead of the bigger picture.

  • Where Codex steps in: Chi-kwan Chan used Codex to generate and test new mathematical approaches. Most of them failed, but that was fine because science works by elimination, not luck.

  • The scientific safeguard: Chan's team can actually inspect and test every algorithm Codex suggests. It's not a black box. If an idea doesn't hold up to repeated testing, it gets tossed.

  • What this could unlock: If these new algorithms work out, scientists could simulate trillions of particles around black holes. That means physics we've never been able to study might finally be within reach.

The Event Horizon Telescope team wants to go from the first-ever black hole image to an actual video of one. Better simulations make that possible. And AI is now helping write the math that gets them there.

Anthropic's Secret Guardrail Backfired Hard:

Anthropic built Fable 5 as the public-safe version of its powerful Mythos model. Most safety guardrails were visible and expected. One wasn't, and researchers noticed fast.

Things to Know:

  • The hidden guardrail: When Fable 5 detected AI research prompts, it silently modified them to produce bad outputs. No refusal, no warning, just quietly broken results behind your back.

  • Why people lost it: AI researchers were furious, calling it a trust violation. Paying for a tool that secretly poisons your work is a very different problem than a straightforward refusal.

  • Anthropic's response: The company told Wired it made the wrong call and apologized. The guardrail stays, but it will now be visible so users at least know when they hit a wall.

  • What this means: Hidden behavior in AI tools is a serious line to cross. Users can accept limits, but nobody wants to pay for something that silently works against them.

Anthropic admitted the tradeoff was wrong, and that's actually worth something. A transparent "no" is always better than a quiet sabotage. Trust, once cracked, is a lot harder to rebuild than a guardrail.

Nous Research Fixes the Agent Setup Problem:

Setting up an AI agent used to mean juggling terminal commands, config files, and a fair bit of patience. Nous Research just changed that with a Profile Builder inside the Hermes Agent dashboard. Your CLI days are not over, but they just got optional.

Things to Know:

  • What a profile actually is: Each profile is its own isolated home directory with separate memory, sessions, and settings. Two agents on the same machine never touch each other's data.

  • What the builder configures: One guided flow handles agent identity, model selection, built-in skills, Skills Hub installs, and MCP server connections. No scattered commands needed.

  • How skills work: Skills are instruction files the agent only loads when a task calls for them. You can stack many without bloating every single request sent to the model.

  • MCP servers included: The builder supports HTTP and local stdio servers. A Nous-approved catalog also handles one-click installs and prompts for any API keys inline.

The builder does not replace the CLI, it just removes the friction for anyone starting fresh. Both paths write to the same profile files in the end. Whether you prefer a form or a terminal, Hermes now works either way.
